Gardeners Berrylands Health and Safety Policy
Gardeners Berrylands is committed to providing gardening and grounds maintenance services in a manner that safeguards the health, safety and welfare of our employees, clients, contractors, visitors and members of the public. This Health and Safety Policy explains our approach to managing risks, preventing accidents and maintaining safe working practices across all projects and locations where we operate.
Our Health and Safety Objectives
Our primary objective is to prevent injury and ill health arising from our work activities. We aim to continually improve our health and safety performance by identifying hazards, managing risks, reviewing procedures and encouraging a strong safety culture throughout the business. We ensure that health and safety considerations are integrated into planning, daily operations and decision making at every level.
Legal Responsibilities and Compliance
Gardeners Berrylands complies with all relevant health and safety legislation and industry regulations applicable to gardening, landscaping and grounds maintenance. We keep up to date with changes in legal requirements, recognised standards and best practice guidance, and we review our arrangements to ensure our work methods remain compliant and proportionate to the risks involved.
Management Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety rests with the company management, who are accountable for implementing this policy and ensuring suitable resources are available. Management will:
Plan work activities to minimise risk and prevent accidents; provide appropriate tools, equipment and protective clothing; maintain safe systems of work and clear procedures; monitor and review health and safety performance; investigate accidents, incidents and near misses and take corrective action where required.
Employee Responsibilities
All employees, gardeners and contractors working on behalf of Gardeners Berrylands have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. Everyone is expected to:
Follow company safety procedures and site rules; use machinery, tools and chemicals in accordance with training and instructions; wear the specified personal protective equipment for each task; report hazards, defects, accidents and near misses promptly to management; cooperate with health and safety training, briefings and risk control measures.
Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices
We carry out risk assessments for our gardening and landscaping operations to identify potential hazards and determine suitable control measures. These assessments cover, where relevant, tasks such as grass cutting, hedge trimming, tree work, planting, use of powered machinery, manual handling, use of chemicals, waste handling and vehicle movements. The findings of risk assessments are communicated to staff, and safe systems of work are implemented and reviewed regularly.
Before starting work on any site, staff are required to assess the immediate environment, identify any new or changing risks and adjust their working methods accordingly. Work will be paused or stopped if conditions are unsafe or if further controls are required.
Training, Competence and Supervision
Gardeners Berrylands provides appropriate health and safety training to all personnel, including induction training, task specific instruction and refresher sessions where necessary. We ensure that staff operating machinery or undertaking higher risk activities hold the relevant skills and, where applicable, qualifications or certifications.
Supervisors are responsible for monitoring standards on site, supporting team members, checking that procedures are followed and providing additional guidance where required. New employees and less experienced workers are given extra supervision until they can demonstrate a safe and competent standard of work.
Use of Tools, Machinery and Equipment
All tools, machinery and equipment used by Gardeners Berrylands are selected, maintained and operated with safety as a priority. Equipment is inspected regularly, and defective items are removed from service until repaired or replaced. Instructions for safe use are followed at all times, and guards, safety devices and emergency stop mechanisms are never bypassed or removed.
Only authorised and trained personnel may operate powered machinery. Fuel, oils and other materials are stored and handled safely to prevent fire, spills or environmental harm.
Chemicals, Pesticides and Hazardous Substances
Where our work involves the use of garden chemicals, including pesticides, herbicides or fertilisers, we assess the risks and apply strict control measures. Products are stored, mixed, used and disposed of in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety guidance. Personal protective equipment is provided and worn as required, and exposure to hazardous substances is kept as low as reasonably practicable.
We seek to minimise the use of potentially harmful substances and, where possible, use safer alternatives and environmentally responsible methods of garden care and weed control.
Personal Protective Equipment
Gardeners Berrylands provides appropriate personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye and hearing protection, safety footwear, high visibility clothing, respiratory protection and weather appropriate clothing, depending on the nature of each task. Employees are required to use and look after this equipment, report damage or loss immediately and request replacements when necessary.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Manual handling is a common element of gardening work, and we take steps to reduce the risk of injury. Staff are trained in safe lifting techniques, use of lifting aids and methods to minimise strain. Heavy or awkward items are moved using suitable equipment or team lifting, and work is planned to avoid unnecessary carrying or repetitive movements where possible.
Public Safety and Site Security
We recognise our responsibility to protect clients, visitors and the public in and around the areas where we work. Gardeners Berrylands plans work to minimise disruption, clearly identifies work areas and, when necessary, uses signs, barriers or temporary exclusions to keep people away from hazards. Tools and equipment are never left unattended in a way that could cause harm, and sites are left safe and tidy at the end of each visit.
Emergency Preparedness and Accident Reporting
Appropriate first aid provisions are made available to our teams, and staff are aware of emergency procedures, including how to respond to injuries, fires or other incidents. All accidents, incidents and near misses must be reported without delay so that they can be recorded, investigated and reviewed. Lessons learned are used to improve our systems, equipment and training.
Monitoring, Review and Policy Updates
This Health and Safety Policy is monitored and reviewed on a regular basis to ensure it remains effective, up to date and relevant to our activities and service area. Feedback from employees, clients and other interested parties is welcomed and considered as part of this process. Where improvements are identified, we act promptly to update procedures and communicate changes to all affected personnel.
By working together and maintaining a strong commitment to safety, Gardeners Berrylands aims to deliver high quality gardening services while protecting the wellbeing of everyone involved with or affected by our work.
